A cyclist in his fifties died on the road between Weedon and Aston Abbotts on Monday 6 October. A 40-year-old Aylesbury man was arrested and bailed. Police want dashcam.
A cyclist died after a collision on the road between Weedon and Aston Abbotts on Monday morning. Thames Valley Police say he was a man in his fifties. He died at the scene.
The force published its witness appeal on Wednesday 7 October and updated it that afternoon. In its own words:
“Yesterday (6/10), around 8.10am, on Aston Abbotts Road between the villages of Weedon and Aston Abbotts, a collision occurred between a cyclist and a red Seat car, heading in the direction of Aston Abbotts. The Seat driver stopped at the scene and is helping with our investigation.”
(Thames Valley Police, appeal for witnesses following a fatal collision, Aylesbury)
The same statement says a second vehicle was involved. A 40-year-old man from Aylesbury, “who was the driver of a second vehicle, a black Ford Puma, also heading towards Aston Abbotts, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail”.
The force’s note to editors says the appeal was updated “as the driver of the other vehicle has come forward to assist our investigation”.
Nobody has been charged. An arrest on suspicion is not a charge and not a finding of fault. The force has not named anyone involved, and neither will we. The cyclist’s next of kin have been told and are being supported by specially trained officers.
What the force is asking for
The investigation is with the Serious Collision Investigation Unit. Its investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Oliver Cahill-Smith, said:
“We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision and are appealing to anybody who may have witnessed the incident, or the circumstances immediately beforehand, to come forward.
“I would also ask anyone who was driving in the area at the time and may have dash-cam footage, but has not yet spoken to police, to please get in touch as even the smallest detail could assist our enquiries.”
There are three ways to pass on what you have:
- upload footage directly through the force’s online portal for this collision
- call 101 or report online, quoting reference 43260521732
- call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or use its website, if you want to stay anonymous
Where it happened
Aston Abbotts Road is the lane between two villages north of Aylesbury. Weedon sits just off the A413, about three miles north of the town. Aston Abbotts is about five miles north-east of Aylesbury, between Weedon and Cublington. The signpost on the green at Aston Abbotts gives the road to Weedon as two and a half miles and marks it as a gated road.
The collision happened at about 8.10am on a Monday, which is why the force is asking for dashcam from anyone who drove the road on their way to work that morning.
A second appeal from the same week
The force is also looking for witnesses to a separate incident in the town the day before. At around 10.35am on Monday 5 October, a silver Mercedes AMG was travelling along Bicester Road, away from the town centre, before colliding with a block of flats at the junction of Putman Street and Bicester Road. The force describes it as a dangerous driving incident and says no arrests have been made. (Thames Valley Police, appeal for witnesses following road traffic collision, Aylesbury)
PC Jake Bye of the Roads Policing Unit asked for anyone who saw the car being driven along Bicester Road before the collision, or who has dashcam, CCTV or doorbell footage, to contact the force online or on 101, quoting reference 43260519780.
What it means for you
- If you drove between Weedon and Aston Abbotts on Monday 6 October before 8.10am, check your dashcam now. Most units record on a loop and overwrite within days. Copy the clip off the card and upload it through the portal above.
- If you were on Bicester Road late on the morning of Monday 5 October, the same applies, with reference 43260519780.
- Doorbell cameras count. The force asks for doorbell footage in the Bicester Road appeal. If you live on Bicester Road near Putman Street, check Monday morning’s recordings.
- Nothing here is a court result. We will report a charge if the force announces one, and will not report anything that happens in court.
We will update this story if Thames Valley Police publishes anything further.
