Buckingham's lights go on outside the Old Gaol from 4pm on Thursday 26 November 2026, with carols and stalls. The 12 December parade has been cancelled.

Buckingham’s Christmas lights switch-on is on Thursday 26 November 2026, 4pm to 7pm, outside The Old Gaol. The date and the venue are confirmed on Buckingham Town Council’s own events calendar, which describes carols, festive activities, local food vendors, “an abundance of local stalls” and live entertainment.

It is free. Note the day: this is a Thursday evening, not a weekend, and it is two days before the end of the month.

Yes, this is going ahead. No, the parade is not

Buckingham has two separate Christmas events and only one of them has been cancelled. It is worth being blunt about this because the council’s own website is currently contradicting itself.

The switch-on is a Town Council event and it is on. The council hangs more than 750 metres of lights from town centre shops and lamp posts, and nothing in its August announcement touched the switch-on.

The Christmas Parade is cancelled. On 20 August the council published a statement saying the independent volunteer Parade Committee that has run it for forty years cannot stage the 2026 event, and that the decision was the committee’s own. The stale listing to ignore

Here is the trap. As of 5 September 2026, the council’s live events calendar still lists a Christmas Parade for Saturday 12 December 2026 at 10.45am, forming up on Chandos Road, with a road closure and a bus diversion. That listing has not been taken down since the cancellation was announced sixteen days earlier.

There is also a Community Fair on the calendar for the same day, 11.30am to 2pm at Buckingham Community Centre, and its description still says it takes place “after the Christmas Parade”.

Do not plan a float, a road closure detour or a Saturday morning around that listing. The parade is off. Whether the Community Fair still runs on 12 December without the parade to feed it is not something the council has said either way.

What replaces the parade, and when we will know

The council’s Town Centre and Events Committee meets on Monday 5 October 2026 to consider the options. The money the council had budgeted for the parade stays ringfenced for a Christmas event in the town, according to the August statement.

Anything the committee decides on 5 October has to be planned, insured and stewarded inside eight weeks, so a like-for-like replacement in 2026 is unlikely. Town council meetings are open to the public and agendas go up in advance.

Buckingham’s street market runs on Tuesdays and Saturdays, 8am to 4pm, right through the period. The switch-on is on a Thursday, so there is no market that day, but there is one on the Saturday either side.

Also worth knowing for the autumn: the Charter Fair comes to the town centre on Saturday 17 October, from 1pm, with road closures arranged by the town council, and the Remembrance Parade is on Sunday 8 November.

Parking and roads

The council arranges road closures for the switch-on, the Charter Fair and the Remembrance Parade, and it also arranges the no parking notices that go with them. No closure notice for 26 November had been published when we checked.
