Aylesbury’s Christmas lights come on at Christmas on the Cobbles on Sunday 22 November 2026. Aylesbury Town Council’s own event listing gives the date, Aylesbury town centre as the venue and 12pm to 6pm as the hours, with the illuminated parade starting at 5pm and finishing with the countdown to the switch-on and a firework display.
Entry is free. It is the town’s biggest free event of the year: more than 5,000 people came to the 2025 one, according to the council’s write-up afterwards.
Confirmed, and not yet confirmed
Only the frame of the day is published this far out. The council updates the detail closer to the time, and its accessibility page says information for 2026 will go up four to six weeks before the event, which puts it in the second half of October.

What actually happens on the day
The shape has been the same for three years, so the 2025 running order is the best guide to 2026 until the council publishes its own.
In 2025 the free activity ran across four spaces: Market Square, Kingsbury, The Exchange and Friars Square. Kingsbury had the funfair rides, Friars Square had family games, crafts and a free Christmas decoration workshop, The Exchange had market stalls and a licensed bar, and the main stage sat in Market Square. Local businesses hosted free taster sessions.
The illuminated parade ran 5pm to 6pm, setting off from the High Street. Santa led it, followed by panto stars from the Waterside Theatre, the Bucks Radio bear, the Mayor, dance schools and volunteer groups, plus a new illuminated swan the council unveiled that night. The parade ends in Market Square, where the countdown happens.
The 2025 switch-on itself was at 5.45pm, led by DJ Dan Blaze with the Town Mayor, and the fireworks went up straight after. Those timings come from the event listing on Visit Aylesbury, which is a Buckinghamshire Council site.
Parking, and the roads that shut
Market Square and Kingsbury are closed to traffic for the event. The council’s accessibility page is explicit that Blue Badge parking is not available in either of them for that reason, so do not plan on dropping anyone at the square.
The formal closure notice for 22 November 2026 has not been published. What the council said about 2025 was that road closures and parking restrictions would be in place across the town centre, and that free parking was laid on at Coopers Yard, Friarscroft and Waterside North with funding from Aylesbury Community Board. That was a year-by-year arrangement and has not been repeated for 2026 yet.
Walking distances from the council’s own accessibility page, measured to Market Square:
- Exchange Street and Waterside North car parks: about 0.2 miles, 322 metres.
- Friars Square multi-storey: about 0.2 miles, 290 metres.
- Upper Hundreds: about 0.3 miles, 483 metres. This is the one with the Changing Places toilet.

Accessibility
The council publishes more here than most, and the 2025 arrangements are worth knowing now even though the 2026 page is still to come:
- Accessible viewing area in lower Market Square next to the stage, reached over the flat “redbrick road”, though the area itself is cobbled. Some seating. Companions may be limited to one per person if it is busy.
- BSL interpretation at the Captain Christmas showings in Friars Square and for the whole of the lights countdown.
- Quiet Zone inside Friars Square during the day, staffed by Hand Talking and marked with a sunflower flag. There is no dedicated quiet zone during the parade, and the council suggests the High Street for a lower-crowd view.
- Ear defenders on a £10 deposit, cash preferred, refunded on return.
- Accessible toilets on the shops level of Friars Square near the bus station lifts. A Radar key is needed and can be borrowed from the Meeting Point.
- Terrain: Market Square is cobbled and uneven. Kingsbury and The Exchange are paved but the slabs can be uneven.
Will it definitely go ahead
The event runs whatever the weather, but parts of it have been pulled before. In 2024 the council cancelled the parade, the fireworks, the main stage and the outdoor stalls on the day because of forecast severe weather. The funfair in Kingsbury, the indoor workshops, the Friars Square activities and the lights switch-on all still went ahead. If the forecast looks bad on the Saturday, check the council’s social channels before setting off.
One small thing the council gets wrong on its own website
If you are trying to work out next year’s date, do not trust the pattern the council states. Its Christmas Lights service page says the switch-on “falls on the third Sunday in November each year”. Its Christmas on the Cobbles page says “the fourth Sunday in November”.
The second one is right. The event was on 24 November in 2024, 23 November in 2025 and is on 22 November in 2026, and all three are the fourth Sunday of the month.

Who runs the lights
Aylesbury Town Council has organised the town’s Christmas lights since 2022, taking them on from the previous arrangement. The contractor is Lamps and Tubes Illuminations Limited, and the council says the display uses LED components and bio-sourced motif materials rather than aluminium, with Buckinghamshire Council contributing grant funding.
